Email from Representative Susan McClain:
Hello friends and neighbors,
Please join my fellow Washington County Representatives and I for a discussion on revenue in our state. May’s revenue forecast shows that Oregon’s economy continues to grow. Unfortunately, the forecast also shows that our revenue system is unstable. Even at a time when business and our economy are strong, our revenue system does not allow us to be making critical investments in vital state services like public schools, senior care and health care programs. We are still facing a $1.4 billion deficit just to get to current service level, which is falling flat on providing services for all Oregonians. Without new revenue, we will have to make cuts that will impact people in every corner of Oregon, including the important services we need and rely one. The Legislature’s Cost Containment work group has also been working on strategies to support this effort with long and short term solutions that could lower costs over future budget years. There is no question that there will be difficult conversations ahead of us, but the magnitude of the budget crisis, however, calls for these tough discussions. We need to continue to look for ways to improve efficiency and reform our revenue system, and of course, we want to hear your voice in this dialogue!
